About Us

St. Basil GOC parish began in mid-1980’s under the name Hellenic Church of New Haven. The first celebration of Easter took place in the Center Church on the Green and religious services from then on were held in the parish house of the Church on the Green for several years until September 1991. During those years the community of the church had acquired a lot on Church Street South in downtown New Haven and the construction of a building had started.

As soon as the building was given the occupancy permit parishioners moved to the new building (September 1992, where they started celebrating Holy Liturgies and other religious services. One of the first things parishioners did was to have a vote and renamed the church to its final name, St. Basil (Agios Vassilios) the Great GOC.

Several years later the construction of the new, permanent Church began in April 2016 and was completed in June 2017. The consecration (Thyranixia) of the church was held on January 12, 2020 thus the church from a house of worship became the Holy House of God. St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church Is part of the Greek Archdiocese of New York.
